Here is the transcript of the interview:
1) When it came to seeking funding via crowd funding, If you could wave a magic wand and have any result today, what would that be? 10,000+ backers. (or any very large number)
2) Why is reaching that result so important to you? What will it change? Not important at all, in fact we did quite well on the campaign with 151 backers and more than that again since the end of the campaign. Mainly a cool thing. The important thing for us was to have a successful campaign, with 100% contributions.=validation of the idea.
3) What are your top three questions about reaching that result? How to connect to potential backers? How to get coverage in the right media? Will we be able to handle the logistics if the campaign goes ‘Gang-busters’ (more backers than expected)
4) What roadblocks do you need to overcome to reach that result? Lack of time. Conflict between finishing off the product & making the campaign a success (require 150% of your time). can take the same amount of time & effort to run a $1k project as it does to run a $1M project. Some of it would be luck, as there is no formula to guarantee a successful campaign, other than having a tangible item, willing backers & a demonstrated track record/enthusiasm & demonstrated expertise & knowledge of what’s involved.
I really liked the environmental recycling message:
“There are hundreds of millions of discarded TV type remote controls in the world. We found a total of 17 in our own home. Our involvement with IR was inspired by the Arduino community and began with an idea to reduce the waste associated with remote controls. We hope that your support for our campaign will help in reducing this waste in the future.”
The only thing that I found annoying was the mixture of text and layout in the initial few paragraphs of the Indiegogo campaign page.
Would be crowdfunding campaigners have a lot to learn from these guys!
